The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has vaccinated over 14,000 stray animals in 10 days as a part of its ongoing Rabies-free Mumbai campaign.

Between September 30 and October 10, the civic body inoculated a total of 14,191 strays, which included 9,493 dogs and 4,698 cats.

This initiative was implemented in the densely-populated areas of Dahisar, Kandivali, Borivali, Malad, Powai, Kanjurmarg, Bhandup, Nahur and Mulund.

A total of 15 teams were part of the campaign, stated a health bulletin issued by the BMC on Monday, October 16. Each team had one person to give vaccines, one for collection of information and one to monitor the process; data collectors and animal handler volunteers were deployed from 7.30am-5pm.

According to BMC’s data, there were 78,756 reported cases of dog bites in 2022, a decrease from the 61,332 cases in 2021 and 53,020 cases in 2020.

The civic officials stated that the initiative exemplifies the city’s commitment to animal welfare and public health. They have advised citizens to vaccinate the adopted pets too and register related information on the BMC’s website.

Moreover, in the western suburbs, the NGOs have equipped approximately 300-400 stray animals with NFC tags. These tags store crucial information about the animals, including their gender, pet status, and vaccination history.

The ministries of central health and family welfare as well as animal husbandry and fisheries have jointly made an action plan to eradicate rabies from the country by 2030.
