According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), fatalities in hit-and-run cases wherein pedestrians, as well as, two-wheelers are the prominent victims, entail more than 30 per cent of road accident deaths in India, stated reports.

On the other hand, in Mumbai from the 1,681 road accident fatalities between 2017 and 2020, more than 17.5 per cent were hit-and-run deaths. This percentage for Maharashtra in the same duration was significantly higher at more than 23 per cent.

Additionally, in 2020, 132 hit-and-run accidents were reported in Mumbai according to the data, with the number of other road accidents being 204. With this, the aggregate number of accidents in the said year stood at 336. This total number is slightly lower than that of 2019 which was 452.

Based on the report, pedestrians count for 47 per cent of the deaths on roads in Mumbai, whilst bikers entail 41 per cent. Narratives have mentioned that transport planning experts are of the opinion that the key to curtailing deaths amongst such users is speed management and ameliorations in pedestrian infrastructure.

Experts are of the opinion that the majority of the victims of road accidents, especially in a hit-and-run situation, succumb because they didn’t attain prompt medical assistance. Adding that their life could have been spared if the accused motorists didn’t abscond the scene.
