Mumbai Police last week revealed that there are a total of 3,901 of abandoned vehicles in the city.

In an official statement, Mumbai Traffic Police said: “All owners of these abandoned vehicles are requested to follow the mentioned procedure to claim their vehicle by February 15, 2024 or else it will be disposed off by legal auction process.”

Earlier, Mumbai Police had issued a public notice for the vehicle owners who have not yet visited the traffic police chowkies to release their vehicles.

The Mumbai Traffic Police in its notification said, "This is to inform the citizens that 3,901 abandoned vehicles are lying unclaimed in different traffic chowkies of Traffic Control Branch of Mumbai Police. A detailed list of these vehicles is displayed on the website of the Mumbai Traffic Police."

"The vehicles are occupying spaces at the traffic chowkies and lying abandoned for months or even years. The space needs to be emptied to make it free for other vehicles hence the process has been initiated," officials added.

How to find your vehicle?

  • Visit the official Mumbai Traffic Police website -- https://trafficpolicemumbai.maharashtra.gov.in
  • Under the Main Page of the website click on the 'Notice' bar
  • Scroll down to 'Abandoned Vehicles'
  • The details can also be viewed through the official mobile application of 'Mumbai Traffic Police App'.
  • Click on the 'Public Notice' on the app

The police further said, "Owners of the vehicles with registration numbers mentioned in the list may please contact Police Inspector, Multimedia Cell Traffic, whose office is located at the Traffic Police Head Quarters, 4th Floor, Sir Pochkhanwala Road, Worli, Mumbai 400030 before 15th of February, 2024."

Documents Needed:

The claimants should bring along with them all original documents pertaining to the vehicle, R.C. Book as well as owner’s identity documents such as Aadhar Card, Driving Licence etc.

It is pertinent to note that in August last year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had reportedly auctioned 4,533 abandoned automobiles to scrap dealers, collecting INR 4.23 crore, sources said.
