According to reports, Maharashtra has administered the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine to 5,10,347 (0.87 per cent) beneficiaries of age group 18 to 44 years in 10 days. The third phase of the vaccination drive, which includes inoculation of all between 18-44 years, begun on May 1.

Constraints in securing online appointments and limited supplies have combined to ensure that less than 1 per cent of the estimated 5.71 crore population in this category could be covered so far.

Meanwhile, in Mumbai, less than 30,000 have managed to get the vaccine out of the estimated population of 55 lakhs, a little over 0.54 per cent.

On Monday, May 10, 4,837 in the 18-44 group took the vaccine, the highest daily turnout so far.

Moreover, the Union Health Ministry on Monday, May 10, informed that over 25 lakh beneficiaries of age group 18 to 44 years have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

After the resumption of third phase, the drive for the 45-plus group too is faltering due to shortage of vaccines and overcrowding at centres, experts stated. On an average, at least 5 lakh people are waiting for the second dose of Covaxin and multiple times of that number are waiting for Covishield.

As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare data, the cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country stands at 17,26,33,761.
