The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) removed over 950 metric tonnes of trash from six Mumbai beaches in the past week. The cleanup followed intense rain and high tides from August 15 to 19, which left a large amount of garbage along the city’s coastline.
The civic body launched a special drive at Girgaon Chowpatty, Dadar-Mahim, Juhu Chowpatty, Versova, Madh Marve, and Gorai beaches. Each day from August 15 to Sunday, 380 BMC employees worked at the sites with six machines to clear the trash.
Juhu Beach saw the highest number of workers, with 150 employees removing 365 metric tonnes of garbage over eight days. At Versova Beach, 120 workers collected 200 metric tonnes. Dadar-Mahim Beach had 48 workers, who cleared more than 300 metric tonnes.

Smaller teams worked at Girgaon Chowpatty, Madh-Marve, and Gorai beaches. They removed 23 metric tonnes, 34.5 metric tonnes, and 20 metric tonnes of trash, respectively.
On Friday, August 22, Mahim Beach appeared heavily polluted. Trash from the sea was spread across its length and stacked in several places, especially near the Reti Bunder, where the Mithi River flows into the Arabian Sea. As per reports, senior BMC officials confirmed that heavy rains and high tides were the main reasons for the accumulation of garbage along Mumbai’s beaches.
