Motorists headed towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) via P D’Mello Road will have to use traffic diversions on Mint Road in the Fort area for at least three more weeks. The route between the two traffic junctions on Mint Road was taped off after a portion of the Kothari Building opposite to GPO collapsed. The five-storey building is a heritage structure that had caught fire recently.

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has appointed a contractor to demolish at least three floors before opening the road to traffic. It had taken to restrict vehicular movement on the road until the demolition work is over. However, even after three weeks of the accident, only the roof of the fifth floor and the side walls have been pulled down.

As Mint Road remains out of order, motorists coming towards GPO and CSMT have to take narrow interior lanes, resulting in traffic jams. For a round trip from Lion gate to CSTM, the travel time has gone up from 20 minutes to an hour.
