Pune District Collector, Rajesh Deshmukh, recently granted an extension for the use of loudspeakers during the Ganeshotsav festival, expanding the originally allotted five days to six. The extended timeframe for loudspeaker usage is now set from 6 am until midnight. An article in the Free Press Journal mentioned that this decision comes following fervent requests from Ganesha Mandals and various politicians.
Amplifying the Joy of Ganpati Festival
The Ganpati festival, celebrated over eleven days, is known for its extensive and vibrant celebrations. Often, organizers incorporate orchestras and cultural programs that run late into the night, aiming to engage and entertain devotees. Consequently, these extensions were sought by mandals to accommodate these festivities. In adherence to Supreme Court guidelines, the use of loudspeakers in public places is typically restricted beyond 10 pm, except for 15 exempted days that are determined by local administrations. This year, Ganeshotsav has made it to the list of exempted days, allowing for extended loudspeaker usage.
Monitoring Noise Levels
The Pune Rural Superintendent of Police has officially approved the extension, which now includes Monday, September 25, a day initially excluded from the permissions. This extension is expected to enhance the celebratory atmosphere during the festival. The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) will be closely monitoring noise levels at 18 different locations in Pune. They will be assisted by a private firm and will ensure that noise pollution remains within the limits set by the Central Pollution Control Board. Monitoring is scheduled primarily for September 22, 25, and 28, covering various zones, including residential, commercial, industrial, and silent areas. This initiative aims to strike a balance between festivities and environmental concerns.
Pune Festival's Grand Inauguration
In a separate celebration of culture and art, the 35th edition of the Pune Festival has kicked off with a magnificent inaugural ceremony held at Shri Ganesh Kala Krida Rangmanch in Swargate. State Tourism Minister Girish Mahajan graced the event as the chief guest for the inauguration. This festival, offering a diverse range of cultural experiences, will continue until September 28.
Actress and politician Hema Malini, known for her three-decade-long association with the Pune Festival, added a special touch to the inaugural function with her performance of Ganesh Vandana. The Pune Festival, a collaborative effort between the Pune Festival Committee, Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation, and the Department of Tourism, Government of India, aims to promote and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the region. Importantly, all events are open to the public, with free entry, encouraging residents and visitors alike to partake in this cultural extravaganza.
