The much-awaited Panvel-Karjat Suburban Rail Corridor, a key infrastructure project under Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) Phase III, is nearing completion.
The Panvel to Karjat route has been developed by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) at a cost of INR 2,782 crore.
The 29.6-km corridor aims to significantly reduce traffic congestion on the Central Railway (CR) line while improving connectivity between Navi Mumbai and Karjat.
According to MRVC officials and recent reports, about 79% of the work on the project has been completed, with major works including bridges, tunnels and station structures now in the final stages.
The corridor will include five stations - Panvel, Chikhle, Mohape, Chowk and Karjat. Once operational, the travel time between Panvel and Karjat will be reduced by about 30 minutes.
According to a reports, this railway line will benefit thousands of daily commuters who commute from Karjat, Bhivpuri, Neral and Khopoli to Mumbai and Navi Mumbai for work.
The project includes 9 major bridges, 35 minor bridges, 15 underpasses, a railway flyover and three tunnels.
Track-laying has begun, which is a key phase of the project. MRVC officials have said that the initial target was to complete it by December 2025.
But now the line is likely to be open to the public by March 2026. This corridor is expected to play a major role in reducing the passenger load on the Central Railway.
Once the line is operational, it will boost development and connectivity in the emerging residential and commercial areas along the route.
