Panvel Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to install 1,500 AI-powered CCTV cameras across 475 locations by the end of this year. The goal is to improve security and public safety in the region.
The civic body has allocated INR 132 crore for this project. It comes after the Navi Mumbai police department requested the authorities many times. The cameras will be placed at major intersections and crowded public areas. They will be equipped with facial recognition and night vision features.
Two command centres will monitor the CCTV network. One will be at the PMC headquarters, and the other at the Deputy Commissioner of Police’s office (Zone II). The cameras will be connected to the police control room for continuous surveillance.
The groundwork for installation has already begun. The work order has been issued, and a ground survey is complete. Construction of poles and cabling for the cameras is happening. Installation is expected to start soon.
Some cameras will also have a public address system. These will be placed at traffic signals and key public areas. Authorities will use them to make announcements, including emergency alerts.
Currently, 44 CCTV cameras are already operational in Panvel under police jurisdiction. The Panvel region is expanding with several large projects. This growth has led to an increase in population. The CCTV network will increase safety and help police manage traffic congestion.
