According to reports, passengers flying from Mumbai at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) have been showing false coronavirus test results in order to commute.

Moreover, the authorities have stated that fake reports showing results of reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests are being presented at the airport. However, is no mechanism to track the veracity of RT-PCR test results.

Back in November last year, CSMIA issued guidelines that stated that domestic passengers from Delhi, Gujarat, Goa, and Rajasthan are required to provide a negative RT-PCR test report undertaken within 72 hours prior to travel. Otherwise, they must undergo the test at the airport on arrival at their own cost. Kerala was added to the list in February. However, it is not possible for officials to cross-check the authenticity of each passenger’s report.

On the other hand, in recent developments, the government stated that it plans to sell its residual stake in already privatised Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad airports as part of the ambitious INR 2.5 lakh crores asset monetisation pipeline identified to raise additional resources.

Moreover, in the first round of airports' privatisation under the Narendra Modi government, the Adani Group bagged contracts for six airports — Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Mangaluru, Thiruvananthapuram, and Guwahati — last year.

The AAI, which works under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, owns and manages more than 100 airports across the country. While in Mumbai International Airport, Adani Group holds 74 per cent stake, the remaining 26 per cent stake is with AAI.
