The cracks developed on the Peddar Road amid heavy rainfall in Mumbai were first spotted by Mahesh Narvekar who is the director of BMC’s disaster management cell. He was the one to alert the Assistant Municipal Commissioner Prashant Gaikwad about the danger at Peddar Road.

According to a report published in the Mumbai Mirror, Narvekar - the head of the disaster management - was on his way home around 11:30 PM on Wednesday when his driver noticed a bulge on the road opposite New Ear School.

As this happened, Narvekar stepped out of his car and also noticed that the road had developed cracks. Realising the dangers of a possible landslide, the veteran BMC official told the assistant municipal commissioner Prashant Gaikwad that road should be closed for traffic.

The landslide occurred on Thursday but no lives were claimed due to the same. Gaikwad had joined Narvekar after the latter altered him about an impending landslide over the phone.

The landslide was caused due to the uprooting of trees on the hill. The flowing water carried a huge amount of soil with it. Looking at this, Gaikwad instructed the BMC staff to block the road at both ends.

“Narvekar’s call came just in the nick of time. By the time I got there, it was clear that the wall would not be able to take the pressure,” Mumbai Mirror quoted Gaikwad as saying.

Narvekar further said that he had not expected such a huge landslide. There was heavy traffic on the Peddar Road even around midnight since the Eastern Freeway and Dr Ambedkar Road were shut, he added.
