On Thursday, December 3, an advocate has filed a petition in the Bombay High Court (HC) against actor Kangana Ranaut seeking an order to suspend or deactivate her Twitter account.

In the petition, the lawyer stated that this aimed at stopping her from “spreading continuous hatred and disharmony through extremist or derogatory tweets or remarks and attempting to divide the people and promote the commission of a crime in the country”.

Moreover, the petition has included Twitter Inc. as a party and sought directions to the social messaging service provider as it failed to take against Ranaut even after the advocate raised an objection to her tweets. It also sought directions to Twitter to implement its community guidelines diligently for users inciting hatred among masses.

Apart from approaching the police to lodge complaints against the animosity filled tweets, the petitioner stated that he wrote to the grievance officer of Twitter Inc. which has its office in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to suspend the Twitter account. However, as no action was initiated, he approached the HC and make Twitter Inc. a party by invoking article 226 and section 482 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The plea is expected to come up for hearing in due course.

The petition has been filed by advocate Kashif Ali Khan Deshmukh, who had earlier filed criminal complaints against the actor and her sister Rangoli Chandel.

While referring to the malicious tweets by Chandel in April, the lawyer stated that after her account was suspended, Ranaut came out in support of her sister through a video wherein she reiterated what Chandel had tweeted. Chandel had, earlier, suggested genocide of persons belonging to a minority community through her tweet.

The petition referred to various posts by the celebrity siblings, including Chandel’s alleged abusive tweet on April 15, targeting a Tablighi Jamaat member, which led to the suspension of her account. The plea claims Kangana posted a video on social media, supporting her sister’s post.
