According to a recent order issued by the state home department, over 45,000 head constables and over 1,10,000 police constables and over 25,000 police naiks who meet certain criteria can now investigate cases in Maharashtra.

With this move, the Maharashtra government is looking to fill the manpower shortage after the state abolished the post of police naik in the police force in 2021, officials said.

According to the order passed online on Friday, May 16, head constables have been given the power to investigate cases registered at police stations.

Along with them, police constables and naiks who have a graduate degree, have been in service for more than seven years and have completed a six-week crime scene investigation course will also be allowed to investigate these cases. Earlier, only officers of the rank of sub-inspector and above were empowered to investigate cases.

"The decision to empower head constables has been taken due to the abolition of the post of police constables in 2021 and shortage of manpower," an official in the state home department said.

"The number of police constables is decreasing due to retirement. While assigning the responsibility of investigating cases to head constables and police constables, the in-charge of the police station will have to consider the capacity of the constables in addition to the qualifications mentioned in the order," an official said.
