On Friday, October 29, the Gadchiroli police evicted the protesters agitating against iron ore mining at Surjagad. Ankit Goyal, Superintendent of Police, said that on Thursday, October 28, they had asked the protestors to wind up their stir, for which no permission was taken. However, they did not listen; hence the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Etapalli gave an order under Section 144 prohibiting congregation.

Early morning today, October 29, they evicted the protestors and detained their leaders. On Thursday, Sanjay Meena, the SP and Collector, met with the protestors and gave them assurance that government would consider their grievances. They should just end their agitation.

Zilla Parishad members Sainu Gota and Ramdas Jarate, who was leading the agitation, were detained. The SP said that they would be produced before the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) later in the day. He was asked how many people were present at the protest site, to which he said that there were 100-odd people present.

The only functioning mine at Surjagad is operated by Lloyd Metals and Energy Ltd, while other firms were granted several more mine leases years ago. The locals have opposed the mines as they feel that they would encroach on the land where tribal deities reside. They also claimed that the permission was given to them without the nod of the local gram sabhas.
