Every year on the occasion of Diwali, vendors set up stalls selling firecrackers, clothes, lamps, rangoli, and lights. Stalls are set up 10 days before Diwali. However, this year many vendors are yet to set up stalls due to the COVID-19 situation.

As Maharashtra went past 1,700,000 confirmed COVID-19 cases on Thursday, the state health department chalked out measures to prevent a potential second wave of COVID-19 infections during winter in Maharashtra. The state government has also appealed to people of Maharashtra to celebrate a cracker-free Diwali, keeping in mind that smoke due to firecrackers could create health issues for people suffering from COVID-19.

Similarly, instructions have been given to all police officials that take strict action should be taken against those responsible for noise pollution and time constraints. Illegal firecracker sellers will be cracked down on and the sale of banned firecrackers will also be monitored by the police.

In the backdrop of coronavirus, all the festivals like Ganeshotsav, Navratri, Eid were celebrated in a simple manner in the state including Mumbai. Diwali is celebrated on a large scale especially in cities like Mumbai. To prevent corona infection, it is mandatory to observe social norms, wear masks and other rules, as well as maintain law and order.

Compared to other cities, Mumbai has a higher rate of sale and purchase of firecrackers. The same opportunity can be taken advantage of by anti-nationals to create havoc. Therefore, the police have been asked to be vigilant in this regard as well. Instructions have been given to increase patrols, especially in religious and places of worship, important sensitive buildings. The police will keep an eye on those who spread rumours as well as those who disturb communal harmony.

Local police have been directed to keep a watch on the crowded markets in Mumbai and in some places SRPF assistance is also being sought.

The Supreme Court has imposed restrictions on the time limit for using firecrackers in 2018. Awareness is being spread by the police through various means to make the citizens aware of the court order.

During Diwali, a large number of gold and silver ornaments are bought and sold. Despite the Corona crisis, markets are crowded. Police stations have been informed to deploy police in crowded places.
