Though the reason for the fire at the Kamala Mills compound is not known, the forensic department has confirmed that 14 people who lost their lives, died due to suffocation (asphyxia) and not due to burns. The forensic department officials have preserved the blood samples of the deceased to investigate the reason behind their deaths.

All 14 died due to asphyxia but we have preserved the blood samples to know more about the level of toxins in the blood. Only 1-2 bodies had minor burns but that was not the reason for death,” Professor Dr Rajesh Dhere, Forensic Medicine.

After the fire incident, around 1:00 AM, the first patient arrived at KEM hospital which was then followed by 13 dead bodies and 12 injured.

Postmortem was carried out on an immediate basis. It started around 4:10 AM and got over by 6:50 AM. By 10:00 AM, 12 dead bodies were handed over to the relatives, said KEM dean Supe.
