Tomato is one vegetable that is used every day in every household. The constant increase in the price has disrupted the monthly budget of many households. The price of tomato has been increasing since last week. At some places in Mumbai, the retail price of tomato has touched almost Rs. 70 per kilogram.

The increase in the price of tomatoes is being attributed to reduced production. In addition to this, there was also a loss of tomato crop due to rain. Last week, the tomato was retailing for Rs. 20-25 per kg and this week the prices have shot up significantly and is retailing at Rs 70 per kg. 

Even in a place like Nashik where tomato is produced the price has gone up to Rs. 35- 40 per kg. Till last week the price of tomato in Nashik was Rs. 20 per kg. The current rates of tomato in Mumbai ranges from Rs. 60-70 per kg. Rs. 80 per kg in Ratnagiri, Rs. 25-30 per kg in Kolhapur, Rs. 30-40 per kg in Sangli, Rs. 50-70 per kg in Solapur and Rs. 60-70 per kg in Nagpur.

The coronavirus pandemic and lockdown has already created a lot of problems for people. Many people are dealing with job cuts or have to stay content with reduction in salary payouts. In all this, the increase in the price of tomatoes will pinch them even harder.
