Right from political parties to the common man, all are targeting the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) over potholes. Amidst this, now questions are being raised over the material used by the contractor hired by the civic body. Many BMC officials do not know about the material used by the appointed contractors.

Contractors use paver blocks instead of cold mix?

During the standing committee meeting, leader of opposition, Ravi Raja, alleged that cold mix used by the BMC is of low quality. He further said that in many places, paver blocks are being used instead of cold mix, that makes roads more susceptible to accidents. He demanded such contractors to be blacklisted.

Meanwhile, in the BMC's defence, the civic body's additional commissioner Vijay Singhal readout area names where cold mix was used to cover potholes. He said that every zone receives 330 to 340 metric tonne of cold mix and have hired contractors for seven zones to carry out the same. He added that the BMC has blacklisted a Zone 3 for haphazardly filling a pothole.

Meanwhile, Singhal admitted that the BMC is not aware of the material used by the contractors to fill the potholes. He also agreed that as the contractor of Zone 6 was hired much later and no contractor was hired for Zone 3, the civic body itself covered the potholes in the said area.

The BMC will be spending ₹125 Cr for five years in order to produce cold mix from the asphalt plant, said Singhal.
