Many cities in containment zones across Maharashtra have been observing a lockdown until June 30, 2020. However, the state government of Maharashtra, at the beginning of June, announced 'Mission Begin Again' initiative where certain relaxations were allowed amidst the lockdown

People across the city have been following social distancing norms and necessary steps are being taken to ensure safety during coronavirus. The government, as a part of the initiative, permitted people to resume work, where maids can be allowed to perform their daily duties, as earlier. However, some societies, amidst the scare, have been following strict rules and have stood against allowing maids to return. Issues regarding the same were raised by many residents who are in need of help but have not received any support due to these guidelines.

Keeping the same in mind, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation, on June 22, appealed to these societies to not stop the maids from coming to work. Talking about the same, MBMC Municipal Commissioner Chandrakant Dange has asked people to lift these restrictions, thereby permitting the necessary staff to begin their duties.

In a conversation with Mumbai Live, he said that there are many buildings houses and societies where people have started going to work on a regular basis, and some houses have elderly people who need support. Considering this, societies should now allow maids to perform their work, keeping the safety aspects in mind, for which societies can perform medical checks and take precautionary steps.

Maids and house help have become an important part of our daily life since they help us manage our daily chores. However, due to coronavirus lockdown and the outbreak of the infection several societies restricted their entry for safety reasons.

However, three months after the lockdown, some societies continue to follow the norms and this has affected many residents who have to now visit offices on a regular basis, and are also in need of them to assist senior citizens. Observing this, the state government recently issued an advisory asking housing societies to ensure that these matters are cleared.

In a recent report, Mumbai Mirror reported that a special member of the counsel for BMC and the state informed the Bombay High Court that under the CHS act 1960 housing societies do not have the power or the authority to take action or decision to prevent maids, drivers, helpers, cleaners and others who provide essential services from entering the premises against the wish, further emphasising that the societies cannot take the character of the police.

Since these restrictions have been relaxed from May 31, 2020, domestic helps can resume work on demand.
