Over the weekend, retail tomato prices in Mumbai have touched a record high of INR 200 per kg. The increase in prices has adversely affected the number of buyers. Tomato shops in some areas had to close shop due to lack of customers.
Due to total crop shortage and large-scale spoilage due to unseasonal rains, prices of tomato, besides several other essential vegetables, have been rising steadily since June. In June, tomato prices almost doubled from the regular rate of INR 30 per kg to INR 50-60 on June 13 and eventually crossed INR 100 by the end of June.
It hit a new record of INR 160 on July 3, with vegetable vendors predicting that the kitchen staple would breach the INR 200 barrier by July 22-23.
According to a TOI report, the wholesale rates of tomatoes range between INR 80 and INR 100 per kg. However, the unfortunate Lonavala landslide incident, followed by traffic jams and diversions, led to supply disruption for the Vashi market, leading to a temporary rise in prices, with hopes that supplies would resume within a few days, but this did not happen due to the recent spike in prices during the weekend.
