Based on the data released by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the number of immersions of Ganesh idols across Mumbai have risen by 16% in contrast to the last year, highlighted a report by the Indian Express. An aggregate of 1.57 lakh immersions was accounted for through the 10-day festivities. Comparing this to the last year, the numbers were 1.35 lakh at artificial as well as natural water bodies.

With the persistence of the coronavirus in the island city, Mayor Kishori Pednekar had urged locals to celebrate the festivities whilst adhering to the covid-19 protocols. The civic authority had asked citizens to not go to the seashore to immerse idols, instead asked them to visit artificial ponds in their vicinity.

In artificial lakes, 79,216 idols were immersed which is slightly more than the 70,233 immersed last year. In 2019, from the 1.96 lakh idol immersed, 33,925 idols were done in artificial lakes.

This year, people couldn’t visit the pandals, due to the restrictions brought in by the authorities in light of the pandemic. The police proclaimed an order that more than five people won’t be permitted in public places.

However, many were seen assembling at the natural water bodies to see and be part of the immersion processions.
