The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has started the process of appointing of concessionaire for the ropeway project. The proposed ropeway project is of INR 568 crores that will connect Gorai, Marve with upcoming Metro line 2A. The construction is likely to begin from January 2023.

The corridor will start at Mahavir Nagar Station on the Metro 2A line (Dahisar to DN Nagar). It will also serve the catchment areas up to Borivali suburban station and recreational areas like Essel World and Golden Pagoda. It will further connect the Gorai village.

At present, these places are connected by ferry to the mainland city. The ropeway will mainly act as a feeder system to the Metro from the surrounding areas. From next year the Metro Line 2A is expected to open for the public.

The proposed ropeway will reduce the travel time from Mahavir Nagar to Gorai to 36 minutes. Currently, the travel time from Mahavir Nagar to Gorai is 1.5 hours.

As per the MMRDA's traffic study, the ropeway in its first year, once operational, will cater to approx more than 1.40 crore people.

Earlier, the ropeway alignment was Borivali–Gorai (7 km) and Malad–Marve (4.5 km). However, the alignment was changed last year, to Mahavir Nagar Metro Station on line 2A to Pagoda–Gorai Village (7.2 km) and Charkop–Marve (3.6 km).
