Mumbai's civic body has been running 504 pre-primary schools from 2007-08. Amongst this, 100 schools are run with the initiative and are funded by NGOs and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. However, this year, 18 NGOs were falling short of funds and so the civic body has decided to give funds for 10 months.

It is reported that the pre-primary school teachers were paid INR 3,000 salary initially, whereas peons were paid INR 1,500. After a recently held meeting, the standing committee has decided to increase the wages by INR 2,000, where the teachers will now be paid INR 5,000. Upon discussion, the revised salary for the peons has also increased to INR 3,000

The estimated budget allotted for pre-primary schools in the city is approximately INR 3.24 crore, and based on the data provided, the civic body earlier used to spend INR 4,700 per month on pre-primary schools. But after the revision by the committee, the spend has now increased to INR 8,200.

Looking at the further data regarding admissions, reports say that around 13,277 students were seeking education in 504 pre-primary schools, in the academic year 2015-16, of which only 7,109 students further got an admission in the first grade. This data only infers that 52 per cent students got passed, which eventually raises many more questions regarding the quality and format of education.
