According to the latest reports, Sanjay Pandey has been appointed as the new Mumbai Police Commissioner, replacing Hemant Nagarale who has now been appointed as the Managing Director of Maharashtra State Security Corporation.

Before Sanjay Pandey, Nagarale was the state's Director General of Police. After Param Bir Singh had to step down from the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner, Nagarale took over the post. Earlier Pandey was the Director-General of Maharashtra.

Here's a glimpse at Pandey's career in the police service:

  • Education in IT Computer from IIT Kanpur
  • IPS officer in 1986 batch
  • He first started working in Pune as an Assistant Commissioner of Police
  • He went on to become an officer of the DCP rank in Mumbai
  • Pandey established Mohalla Samiti for the first time in Dharavi during the 1992 Mumbai riots for riot control and social cohesion
  • Pandey became the first DCP to create Zone 8 with four high profile police stations in Mumbai and completed a term of almost three years
  • In 1995, as DCP of the Narcotics Department, he cracked down on drug rackets in the city
  • While in the Economic Offenses Wing in 1997, he investigated the Abhuday Bank scam, the Leather scam and exposed the corruption.
  • In 1998, he went to Harvard University for postgraduate studies.
  • While in the SPG in 1999, he was deployed under the protection of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee
