With monsoon every year, thousands of ramshackle structures in Mumbai pose the risk of collapsing. In order to create awareness about the same, Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust (SUBT) has initiated a mass campaign – ‘Behtar Kal’.

As a part of this initiative, SBUT organised a Monsoon Awareness Walk in Bhendi Bazaar on May 13, where over 200 students from nearby schools and the tenants who had shifted to SBUT transit accommodations educated the tenants still residing in the unsafe buildings in Bhendi Bazaar.

Shri Amin Patel, MLA, Mumbadevi who flagged off the walk said, “I am glad that through this walk and various other initiatives a message is sent out to city dwellers who risk their lives and reside in dangerous and dilapidated buildings. We are working closely with the trust and will extend our full support in their redevelopment endeavor.”

The march through the lanes of Bhendi Bazaar was trailed by an on-ground appeal meet by SBUT representatives to instruct people about the significance of living safely during monsoon. So far, SBUT has vacated over 2400 families and close to 700 businesses from Bhendi Bazaar as a part of the redevelopment project. The trust has also been working with MHADA, BMC and other government authorities to remove the non-cooperating tenants that still live in the ramshackle buildings.

Along with the march, members of fire department also conducted a mock drill to enlighten people of precautionary measures to be taken during the times of mishap in order minimalise the risks.
