The Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) on Monday, May 23, released a schedule for drawing a lottery for reservation of seats in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and 13 other municipal corporations in the state.

The SEC’s latest order follows the Supreme Court’s directive on May 4, which said that reservation lottery should be held on May 31 without OBC quota.

As per the notification by SEC, the lottery will be drawn for SC, ST and general category seats for women on May 31. However, the lottery for OBC reservation will not be held as the issue is pending in the Supreme Court, the SEC notification clarified.

This development also came at a time when the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government has been pushing to ensure reservation for other backward classes (OBC) in local body elections.

In a separate order, SEC has proposed a similar time schedule for 13 other municipal corporations including Navi Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, Kalyan-Dombivli, Kolhapur, Thane, Ulhasnagar, Nashik, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur, Amravati, Akola and Nagpur.

Here’s the schedule:

  • The BMC will issue notices in local newspapers, on websites and on notice boards on May 27.
  • The lottery for these reserved and general seats will be drawn on May 31.
  • Thereafter, a draft on ward wise reservations will be published on June 1 while BMC will invite suggestions and objections on fixing ward wise reservations from June 1 to 6.
  • Later, the final ward reservation list will be published in the gazette on June 13.
