Resident doctors at Cooper Hospital had demanded deployment of Maharashtra Security Force (MSF) personnel after private guards were seen standing by during the recent assault on three doctors.
In a meeting held on Monday with Deputy Commissioner of Health, Dr. Neelam Andrade (Director of Medical Education and Major Hospitals), Dr. Mohan Joshi (Dean, Sion Hospital), and Dr. Shailesh Mohite (Dean, Nair Hospital), it was decided to immediately post MSF guards at Cooper Hospital.
Until the MSF recruitment process is completed, the Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s security department will assign eight additional guards per shift (24 in total) for round-the-clock security. The measure took effect from Monday afternoon, informed Dr. Dev Shetty, Medical Superintendent of Cooper Hospital.
The hospital administration has been instructed to submit a formal proposal for MSF deployment, which will be finalised and sent to the Municipal Corporation by Tuesday.
To promote awareness among patients and relatives, informational boards will also be installed in the hospital premises. These will outline provisions of the Maharashtra Doctors Protection Act and guide visitors on appropriate conduct and communication with medical staff, Dr. Shetty added.
