Since the number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Ward K-West has been increasing, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken a decision to seal seven slums in Andheri West, Vile Parle West and Jogeshwari West (K-West ward). Reports state that these slums are home to around 1.2 lakh people and this move will help them manage coronavirus cases closely.

Following are the areas which will be sealed in Ward-KW (Andheri West, Vile Parle West and Jogeshwari West) for the next 14 days:

  • Nehru Nagar 
  • Anand Nagar
  • Juhu Koliwada
  • Junaid Nagar/Samata Nagar
  • Gaondevi Dongri (Gilbert Hill)
  • Juhu Galli
  • Versova

Areas like Juhu Koliwada have been in control and officials are planning to monitor the same, and maintain no or nil positive cases. Data suggests that the number of Containment zones in Ward-KW increased to 255, as of May 9, 2020, and observing this the ward officer decide to seal the areas completely. Out of these 255 zones, 180 are in congested areas and 73 belong to the slums, which will be sealed for the next 14 days.

Further, officials will also consider erecting towers to ensure better management. These will be made of bamboos and will be ready in the next two or three days. Officials stated that the structures will be used to address the public, when in need, as it gets difficult for police officers to handle the crisis in these areas. Teams assigned to manage these slums will coordinate with the public and residents to ensure essential services are provided on time and when needed. Police officers and a team leader will act as the guardians and the decisions will be taken by senior officials with an aim to effectively manage the containment areas. 

Cleanliness and sanitation will be maintained by the Solid Waste Management Department, as one staff members will be assigned for every toilet on a shift basis to disinfect the common toilets used in the slums.
