Sharad Pawar, NCP leader, is trying to tackle the growing number of cases of coronavirus in Pune, meeting district and health officials, corporators and his own party workers, to discuss ways to contain the spread of COVID-19.

This came after two prominent personalities, succumbed to the disease due to the non-availability of a cardiac ambulance. On Thursday, Pawar had made a surprise visit to Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation and took hold of the entire situation. The next day, he met officials of Pune Municipal Corporation.

In the past, Ajit Pawar had taken over the reins of Pune's health department. He had shunned out Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Gaikwad and entrusted specific tasks to all the bureaucrats. However, noticing that the COVID-19 situation showed no signs of slowing down, Sharad Pawar stepped in.

As of Saturday, September 5, Pune had clocked more than 1.94 lakh coronavirus cases, 57,000 of them active, both figures putting it ahead of the next two cities in the highest list, Delhi and Mumbai. Mumbai has less than half its active cases and Delhi about one-third.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra has clocked 23,350 fresh cases of the coronavirus taking the COVID-19 tally to 9,07,212 in the last 24 hours. The positivity rate, recovery rate, and fatality rate for the coronavirus in the state stand at 19.52 per cent, 71.03 per cent, and 2.93 per cent respectively.
