On Tuesday, December 29, opposition parties in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) took on the Shiv Sena administration over the decision to waive the penalty imposed on The Taj Mahal Palace hotel while going back on the word on waiving property tax for residents who stay in homes measuring less than 500 sq ft.

Even though the Congress and the NCP are part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government along with the Shiv Sena, the two parties did not hold themselves back in attacking Sena’s functioning in the BMC.

Moreover, Ravi Raja from Congress, NCP corporator Rakhi Jadhav and Samajwadi Party MLA Rais Shaikh held a joint press conference targeting the Sena-led BMC for clearing a proposal to waive around ₹9.5 crores penalty imposed on The Taj Mahal Palace.

On the other hand, earlier on Monday, December 28, the Shiv Sena put up banners outside the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office addressing it as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state office.

This comes after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had summoned Varsha Raut, wife of Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut in Mumbai with regards to the Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank scam case. Moreover, she has been instructed to be present at the ED office on December 29. This happens to be one of the third summon sent to the Sena leader’s wife. According to sources, Varsha Raut had skipped the earlier two summons citing ill health.

A notice was issued to NCP president Sharad Pawar before the assembly elections. Recently, Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Saranaik and NCP leader Eknath Khadse were also asked to appear before the ED for inquiry.
