Mumbai has a new mayor. He is none other than Vishwanath Mahadeshwar from Shiv Sena. He won with 171 votes in the election conducted on Wednesday. Maharashtra Nariman Sena abstained from voting. Once the BJP offered its support, there wasn't any speed-breaker to his election.

Earlier CM Devendra Fadnavis had announced that the BJP will not contest the post of the Mayor. He added that the BJP will not even contest the deputy mayor's post.

Vishwanath Mahadeshwar was elected as the corporator from ward no 87, Bandra east. He has been a member of various committees in the BMC. Earlier the BMC commissioner had called a meeting of all 227 newly elected corporators. 7 corporators of the MNS did not attend this meeting.

The voting for the mayor's post started around 12.30pm and was done in the next 30 minutes. The only opposition was from the Congress which had fielded its candidates.
