The superintendents of all district jails in Maharashtra have been ordered by the ADG, state prison, Atulchandra Kulkarni to check for drugs or other banned items in jails with the assistance of dog squads of the local police, reported Mid-Day.

Arthur Road Jail’s Superintendent has reportedly written a letter to Mumbai Police’s concerned departments, asking for a dog squad in this regard. Apart from this, the letter also sought a usual anti-sabotage search in the jail with the assistance of the dogs, mentioned the account.

Based on the narrative, every accused coming into the jail is screened. Nonetheless, if a banned item is taken inside by an individual, the sniffer dogs will help trace it. Adding that Arthur Road Jail has a capacity of nearly 800 accused, but nearly 3,500 are kept there.

Out of these, hundreds go to court for appearances every day. Therefore, they have to be screened when taken from jail to court and back again.

In other developments, earlier in November, it was reported that Arthur Road Jail and Byculla District Prison inmates were vaccinated with both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccination drive inside the prison was conducted by Project Mumbai, an NGO with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
