We fully support the right to freedom of expression, but the stance expressed by Principal Parveen Shaikh on social media is completely inconsistent with the values upheld by the 'Somaiya Management'. Explaining this, the management of Somaiya School dismissed Parveen Shaikh on Tuesday.

Parveen Shaikh, headmistress of Somaiya School in Mumbai, expressed her views on the text, which was sympathetic and supportive of Palestine and Hamas. The news in this regard was published on a website on April 24.

The school management then called Shaikh for questioning. Also, in a meeting held on April 26, the school management asked her to resign. Even after that she continued to work for a few days. Meanwhile, the management of Somaiya School ordered her to submit a written explanation.

Shaikh then submitted a written disclosure on Monday (May 6) and was adamant that she would not resign from her post till the end. But after a written disclosure and inquiry process, the Somaiya school management decided to fire her on Tuesday. In this regard Sheikh was informed through e-mail. Also the management of Somaiya School gave this information through a press release and clarified its position.

What does the organisation say?

Our motto is 'Jnandev Tu Kaivalyam'. We are committed to increasing understanding in the society and fulfilling social responsibility through education. But Parveen Shaikh's social media posts, comments etc. are completely inconsistent with the values we uphold.

Keeping in view the seriousness of the entire matter and after thorough consideration, the management has terminated Parveen Shaikh's association with the organisation. So that our values of unity and inclusiveness are not compromised.

What does Parveen Sheikh say?

I was shocked to hear the news that I was removed from the post of headmistress. The notice given to me in this regard is totally illegal. This action is based on false allegations made against me and is defamatory. The work I have done as a headmistress has been excellent and it is unfair to remove me in this manner.

For the past 12 years I have worked tirelessly for Somaiya School and contributed to the development of the school. But instead of standing behind me in this very strange campaign against me, the organisation decided to take action. This action appears to be politically motivated. I have full faith in the judiciary and the Constitution of India. A legal battle will be fought after this action.
