This monsoon if a citizen spots a pothole on Mumbai roads can raise a complaint with the concerned official. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is slated to publish a list depicting the names and contact numbers of the civic body and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) officials who will address such issues, reported the Hindustan Times.

A senior civic official was quoted in the account elaborating on how areas under the jurisdiction of the BMC and MMRDA will be mentioned along with the names and numbers of the officials in charge. The public would be able to access it in newspaper advertisements, BMC websites or the potholefixit mobile app.

Based on the narrative, the commissioner of MMRDA, SVR Srinivas added that both the agencies would liaison to ensure a quick response.

Through the years, the two agencies have been passing the buck when it comes to potholes that appear on roads, following heavy rainfall. While the MMRDA looks after roads where the infrastructure work is underway and arterial roads, the BMC looks after the remaining roads. On the other hand, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) maintains flyovers on the eastern and western express highways.

It has been reported that P Velarasu additional municipal commissioner issued a circular on June 10 elucidating that the BMC received many complaints about potholes and bad patches concerning the Western Express Highway (WEH) as well as the places where the Metro works are underway.

The circular further mentioned that the BMC forwarded these complaints to the MMRDA who allegedly leaves them unattended. The civic body believes it ends up taking the blame for potholes on roads and bridges under the MMRDA.

Narratives mention that the MMRDA rebuked this in a press statement wherein it highlighted that it had made round-the-clock control rooms to solve monsoon-related issues such as potholes, waterlogging and tree collapse. These control rooms look to curtail inconvenience to vehicular and pedestrian traffic across project sites. This venture by the MMRDA is on similar lines to the civic body's disaster management control rooms.
