The Maharashtra government has approved the extension of Mumbai Metro Line 5 and the new Mumbai Metro Line 5A, a combined project. The two lines will create a total metro network of 34.2 km in the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan-Ulhasnagar area, at an estimated cost of ₹18,130.55 crore.

Metro 5, originally approved in October 2017, is a 24.9 km elevated line. It included 17 stations connecting Thane, Bhiwandi and Kalyan. The project is being implemented in two phases.

Phase 1:

The 11.9 km stretch (6 stations) between Thane and Bhiwandi is in its final stages. Due to the lesser rehabilitation challenges, the work on this stretch is being completed relatively quickly.

Phase 2:

The 10.475 km stretch (6 stations) between Bhiwandi and Kalyan, however, has been delayed due to encroachments.

In June 2023, some sections from Durgadi to Kalyan were made underground instead of elevated, which increased the cost by 1,427 crores.

In June 2025, it was decided to make some sections underground between Dhamankar Naka and Temghar by changing the design again. The cost of this phase has now increased to 7,326.13 crores.

Metro 5 will now end at Durgadi instead of Kalyan. A new Metro 5A has been launched to maintain connectivity with Kalyan and beyond.

Metro 5A Features:

Length: 11.83 km

Route: Durgadi – Aadharwadi – Khadakpada – Kalyan – onwards to Ulhasnagar

Stations: 7

Estimated cost: INR 4,063 crores

These two lines will together create a network of 19 stations, with an interchange at Durgadi.

Apart from this, a double-decker structure (flyover + metro) will be constructed between Ranjanoli Junction and Durgadi Chowk to reduce traffic congestion in Bhiwandi.

According to officials, the project has been made economically viable by incorporating Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) and commercial uses at the stations.
