Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the state government has decided to regularise 27,000 unauthorised constructions in Ulhasnagar at the earliest by charging 10 percent of the occupancy fee of the ready reckoner. Earlier, the decision to regularise constructions by levying fines had failed.

After the partition, the citizens who came from West Pakistan have been resettled in Ulhasnagar and in Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation with an area of 1350 hectares, there are 30 percent i.e. about 27 thousand unauthorised constructions. Based on the law made by the government in 2001 to regularise unauthorised constructions in Gujarat, the then coalition government also decided to regularise unauthorised constructions in Ulhasnagar in 2006. At that time, provision was made in this Act to regularise the unauthorised constructions of INR 2200 per square metre and for unauthorised construction on government land, as determined by the Collector.

Citizens of Ulhasnagar did not respond to this plan. As a result, the campaign did not get much success. Therefore, the government constituted a committee under the chairmanship of the Upper Chief Secretary of the Revenue Department to find a way out. The committee, while reporting in April 2022, had recommended a reduction in fines levied on these constructions. According to this, the cabinet has approved the proposal to regularise these constructions by levying only 10 percent penalty of ready reckoner and its government decision will also be issued soon, sources said.
