State shuts down 214 children homes due to lack of basic facilities

With an immediate effect, the state government has decided to shut down 214 children's homes as they have failed to meet basic facilities prescribed under the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act. The state will cancel registrations of these homes as per the decision was taken by State women and child development (WCD) on Friday. 

The list has two children’s homes from Mumbai - Children’s Aid Society, Mankhurd and Anjuman-E-Mufidul Yatama, Madanpura.

The government has given them strict orders to not to enrol new children. Also, children who were living in the shelter will be shifted to other children’s homes. 

As per the report published in Hindustan Times, two years ago, an inspection was carried out by the WCD department to check the living conditions of 963 children’s homes affiliated with the state. 

Upon checking, it was found that 214 children’s homes had no basic facilities, the state government decided to cancel registrations.

In order to run the children’s homes, the state government gives INR 900 per month per child to these homes and besides this, the non-governmental organization (NGO) running them spend 10% of the operational cost.

According to JJ Act, the children’s homes should have basic facilities like boarding, lodging, bathing, and toilet. Along with this, they are also expected to take care of their basic needs such as food, clothing, health care, nutrition and additional facilities for education, vocational training, and recreation.

During the inspection, out of 963 children’s homes, only 476 children’s homes were put in ‘A’ and the state decided to give one more chance to 273 homes that got a place in B category.
