In order to restrict the illegal use of plastic bag in the city, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has intensified its actions. The civic body is cracking down on sellers, shopkeepers and traders who supply plastic bags.
As per the instructions of NMMC Commissioner Abhijeet Bangar, the civic body carried out a raid on Thursday, March 11, in a joint operation with the police. They seized 2,000 kg of banned plastic bags from the APMC wholesale market.
A penalty of INR 15,000 has been imposed from the L N Trading Company inside the APMC market, in sector 19A, for using single-use plastic bags. A complaint has also been lodged at the APMC police station. This is one of the biggest seizure in the last year one.
The Koparkhairane ward officials were carrying out an anti-plastic drive led by additional municipal commissioner Sujata Dhole.
On interrogating the vendor carrying plastic bags, the NMMC team understood that the bags were procured from inside the APMC market, towards the Turbhe end.
The civic officials then landed at the shop as a third party and demanded plastic bags. After the shopkeeper handed over the bag to the official, they took an action against him and tracked the company selling plastics in a large stock.
Officials who were a part of this drive -- Deputy Commissioner of Solid Waste Management Dr. Babasaheb Rajale, Town Planner Keshav Shinde, Divisional Officer and Commissioner Ashok Madhavi and Subodh Thanekar, Chief Sanitation Officer Rajendra Sonawane, Sanitation Officer Sudhakar Wadje along with other ward officers and staff.
