After a massive fire broke out at the Sunrise Hospital in Dreams Mall, Bhandup, which killed 10 patients, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration on Wednesday, March 31, has decided not to renew the licence of the hospital.

Without the renewal of the licence, which was expired on March 31, the hospital can no longer be operational.

Due to the outbreak of coronavirus in Mumbai, the civic body had given permission to start a COVID care Centre at Sunrise Hospital. However, the term had expired on February 28 but the hospital administration extended it till March 31.

Just a few days ahead of the expiration of the licence, on March 26, a huge fire broke out in Dreams Mall and its aftermath hit Sunrise Hospital, killing 10 patients. At present, Dreams Mall and the hospital are closed and the municipal administration has decided not to allow Sunrise to reopen the hospital in future.

The BMC said it did not extend the nursing home licence which ended on March 31 since the hospital management did not submit a new No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Fire Brigade and permanent Occupation Certificate (OC).

The BMC additional municipal commissioner Suresh Kakani said that they had applied for an extension but we have not extended the nursing home licence since they did not get NOCs from the Fire Brigade and the permanent OC from the Building Proposal (BP) department. Their nursing home licence has expired on March 31 and they will have to shut down the hospital unless they comply with these requirements.

In a meeting of the standing committee, the opposition left no stones unturned to criticise the municipal corporation and the ruling MVA government for its negligence.
