The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a notice to the Union government and others while hearing the petition which sought to rename the Bombay High Court as Maharastra High Court.

The apex court has demanded a detailed response from parties to the petition in this matter. The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by retired labour court judge VP Patil.

Issuing notice to the centre, the bench headed by Chief Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde said that the apex court seeks detailed response from the parties on the matter to change Bombay HC’s name to ‘Maharashtra High Court’.

According to media reports, the petition filed by Patil stated that the word “Maharashtra” is significant for Maharashtrians and its usage must also find expression in the name of the High Court. Patil, who has served as a judge for 26 years, sought enforcement of fundamental rights of the citizens of Maharashtra through his petition.

He sought a direction to the authorities to take effective steps for implementing a clause of the Maharashtra Adaptation of Laws (State and Concurrent Subjects) order, 1960 for conservation and preservation of distinct culture, heritage and traditions of the people of Maharashtra.

The petition stated that the Supreme Court should consider that expression of regional and geographical identity forms part of freedom speech and expression of regional and guaranteed under Article 19 of the Indian Constitution.

“The expression of the word Maharashtra while referring to the high court pertaining to state amounts to the fundamental right of the petitioner,” the petition said.

Patil also said that other states should also be directed to change the names of their high courts as per their locations.
