In order to curb vehicles entering the wrong side, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), in collaboration with the city traffic police department, have installed tyre killers on Shivaji Maharaj Path near the Thane railway station locality on Sunday, February 2.
This initiative aims to reduce accidents, as well as smooth the traffic congestion in the city. The purpose of installing tyre killers is to prevent vehicles from entering in the wrong side in city and, improve traffic management, and reduce accidents which is caused by driving on the wrong side of the road.
For the unversed, tyre killers puncture the tyres if vehicles move on the wrong side. Tyre killers come out and spike, which directly pierces the tyre if the vehicle attempts to pass over it. The spikes of tyre killers are very large and puncture the tyre, causing damage and needing for replacement.
Additionally, 10 days ago, signboards were placed 100 and 200 meters before the tyre killers, which is a warning for drivers to not to drive on the wrong side as tyre killers are ahead. The lighting should be ensured in this zone. Now, vehicles driving on the wrong side will be stopped.
After the success of the pilot project, tyre killers will be installed on all one-way roads in the city.
Initially, the Thane civic body and the traffic department decided to install tyre killers at three locations: Subhash Path near the railway station area, Gaondevi temple area, and B Cabin area. These three locations have a higher incidence of wrong-side driving and traffic congestion, posing a risk of accidents, officials stated.
