The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has claimed that by January 2022 garbage dumping in Diva will be stopped.

On Thursday, December 2, civic commissioner Dr Vipin Sharma signed an agreement for the land in Bhandarli in the presence of Thane Mayor Naresh Mhaske, and the plot will be used for the scientific treatment of waste.

The municipal corporation has claimed that the processing of waste can commence by January next year at Bhandarli.

All the waste generated in Thane, Mumbra and Kalwa, over a decade, was dumped on four dumping spots in Diva, and the dumping ground was near the creek, leading to the destruction of mangroves.

Sharma said the plot has been shown the plot to Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to seek its permission. The corporation will spend a total of ₹2.40 crores on the plot. It includes rent and operational costs.

While in the next six months, the Daighar waste-to-energy project, wherein electricity will be generated out of the waste, will gain momentum. Once the Daighar plant is operational, they will shut the collection centre at CP Tank in Wagle Estate, said Sharma.

Meanwhile, Thane city executive member, BJP, said that the move came just before the elections, and it looks like a poll gimmick.
