In a gruesome incident, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) Assistant Commissioner Kalpita Pimple and her security were grievously injured on Monday, August 30, when a street vendor attacked them with a huge knife during an anti-encroachment drive.

Kalpita lost two fingers in the attack while Somnath Maruti Palve, her security guard, lost one finger as both used their hands to fend off the attacker. Both are in the hospital undergoing treatment.

The civic administration has condemned the attack where the commissioner received head injuries as well when a hawker stabbed her with a knife during an anti-encroachment drive in Maharashtra’s Thane district.

The incident took place when Kalpita Pimple, the AMC of Majiwada-Manpada area, was overseeing the removal of hawkers at Kasarvadavali junction in the city.

The attacker, identified as Amarjeet Singh Yadav, a vegetable vendor, was arrested on the spot even as he threatened to harm himself with the same knife if the police came near him.

Pimple was rushed to a private hospital where she underwent surgery to reattach her fingers and was also provided medical treatment for her head injuries, a civic official said.

Mayor Naresh Mhaske later expressed concern over the attack on the civic official and told that such incidents would not discourage the civic body and the drive against encroachments in the city would be intensified.

He also said that the civic body will bear the cost of treatment of the injured official and her security guard.

Moreover, Thane Municipal Commissioner Dr Vipin Sharma said additional security forces will be deployed during such anti-encroachment drives in future.
