A series of accidents involving heavy vehicles on Ghodbunder Road has raised serious concerns over the safety of motorists and commuters. Several incidents have been reported on the busy stretch between Kapurbawdi and Kasarvadavali over the past one-and-a-half months.
The five-to-six-kilometre stretch has witnessed heavy vehicles overturning, crashing into dividers and other vehicles, and losing control. The situation has become a major concern for commuters, particularly during peak traffic hours.
A recent fatal accident further highlighted the risks. On July 8, a crane overturned onto a rickshaw in the Kasarvadavali area, killing two people and injuring another.
Ghodbunder Road is a key route connecting Thane with Mumbai, Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar and Gujarat. Rapid development along the corridor has resulted in a significant increase in residential and commercial activity, putting additional pressure on the road.
Traffic congestion is particularly severe during morning and evening peak hours. Ongoing infrastructure projects, including Metro construction, station-related work and changes to service roads, have further affected traffic movement at several locations.
Multiple Accidents Reported
Several heavy vehicle accidents have been reported along the stretch in recent weeks:
August 18: A truck carrying around 10 tonnes of wooden material from Delhi to Nhava Sheva overturned near Kapurbawdi after the driver reportedly lost control. The vehicle took nearly four hours to clear.
July 29: A truck travelling from Rajasthan towards Mahad crashed into a divider near the Kapurbawdi petrol pump after the driver lost control.
July 26: A container carrying around 25 tonnes of scrap overturned into a 10-foot-deep pit near Chitalsar-Manpada.
July 23: A container crashed into the divider near the Patlipada flyover, resulting in major traffic congestion.
July 8: A crane overturned onto a rickshaw in Kasarvadavali, killing two people and injuring one.
July 3: A truck carrying around 12 tonnes of jaggery from Pune to Dahanu hit the Kasarvadavali flyover divider and was left hanging over the road below.
Motorists and local residents have called for stricter monitoring of heavy vehicles and stronger road-safety measures on the busy corridor. The frequency of accidents has also renewed demands for authorities to review heavy-vehicle movement and address traffic and infrastructure-related issues on Ghodbunder Road.
