In Thane, Mayor Sharmila Pimpolkar and Deputy Mayor Krishna Patil distributed digital bus passes to senior citizens in a special ceremony held at the Mayor’s office on Wednesday, February 18.
The initiative has been launched by the Thane Municipal Corporation’s Transport Department to make bus travel easier and more convenient for citizens aged 60 years and above. On this occasion, 11 senior citizens were symbolically presented with digital passes by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The Mayor appealed to maximum eligible citizens to take advantage of the scheme.
The state’s Deputy Chief Minister and former Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had earlier introduced a free travel scheme for senior citizens aged 60 and above using public transport services. Under the previous system, seniors could travel free by showing valid government ID proof and obtaining a zero-fare ticket.
On similar lines, the administration has now introduced digital passes. The scheme has received an enthusiastic response, and around 1,000 senior citizens will be issued these passes. The application process is currently underway, and passes will be distributed in phases. Until citizens receive their digital passes, zero-fare tickets will continue to be issued under the old system.
