The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has announced a 24-hour complete shutdown of water supply in several parts of the city beginning at noon on Thursday, June 18, as part of a water conservation strategy amid concerns over a delayed monsoon.
According to the civic administration, the decision was taken following a high-level review meeting with the Water Resources Department on June 9. Authorities cited the possibility of a delayed monsoon due to the combined effects of El Niño and the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), which could lead to water shortages in the coming months.
To safeguard water reserves, TMC has decided to implement a mandatory 20 per cent reduction in the city's water supply. As part of this initiative, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) will temporarily stop water supply from its Jambhul Water Treatment Plant for maintenance and supply management purposes.

The civic body has cautioned residents that water supply may continue at low pressure for up to 48 hours after the shutdown ends on Friday. Officials said it will take time for the distribution network to regain normal pressure levels.
TMC has appealed to residents to store sufficient water in advance and use it judiciously during the shutdown period. Citizens are also requested to cooperate with the administration's efforts to manage water resources effectively during the anticipated dry spell.
For emergencies, water tanker requirements, or additional information, residents can contact the TMC Disaster Management Cell.
