Heavy rains hit Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane starting Sunday night and continued into Monday morning, severely affecting daily life. The downpour caused major disruptions, especially for the working-class population commuting to work. Roads leading from Thane to Mumbai experienced massive traffic jams, with long queues of vehicles seen from the Anandnagar toll plaza to the Teen Hath Naka flyover. Traffic congestion was also reported on several internal roads within the city.
The rain, which intensified from midnight onwards, led to waterlogging in many low-lying areas. The Meteorological Department had already issued a warning for heavy rainfall in Mumbai and Thane, and the situation unfolded just as predicted. Road traffic slowed down significantly due to water accumulation on city roads and highways. Additionally, potholes caused by the continuous rain made driving conditions even worse. Rail services were also disrupted, adding to the woes of daily commuters.
A large number of people travel from Thane to Mumbai for work, many of whom rely on private vehicles due to limited train availability. These vehicles usually enter Mumbai via the Anandnagar checkpoint in Kopri, Thane. However, due to the ongoing rainfall, vehicles were backed up at the toll plaza, causing problem on the traffic flow toward Teen Hath Naka flyover. Many commuters were stuck in the jam for extended periods.
In another incident, a heavy vehicle got stuck at Gaimukh Ghat on the Thane-Ghodbunder Road, further worsening the traffic situation. The transport department deployed a crane to remove the vehicle, but the blockage caused additional delays on that route. According to the Thane Municipal Corporation’s Disaster Management Department, 29.70 mm of rainfall was recorded in the past 24 hours, leading to water accumulation in several parts of the city.
