Amid the increasing congestion in Mumbai local trains, the Western Railways (WR) has inducted 15-coach consecutive local train in its fleet. It is pertinent to note that this is India's first ever 15-car EMU rake.

This train has more space than a simple local train and 7555 passengers can travel in a coach at a time.

It has been manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. On Wednesday, February 18, this local train left Chennai for Mumbai. The aim is to start running on the Western Railway route soon.

Moreover, ICF will manufacture 12 such rakes in the coming months. The second local train is likely to be introduced by the end of February.

As per WR officials, 15-coach locals will be operated along with the existing 12-coach locals on the same timings, which will increase passenger capacity and help reduce overcrowding.

After Western Railway, these local trains will also run on Central Railway. Due to this, passengers on CSMT-Kalyan, Virar-Dahanu and Karjat-Kasara routes will get a big relief. These routes are the most crowded.

Apart from this, ICF will soon be manufacturing non-AC local trains with two automatic doors for Mumbai Suburban Railway. These non-AC local trains will soon be introduced on Central and Western Railways.

Meanwhile, the Railway Ministry has also ordered the introduction of 238 new 12-coach local trains for Mumbai.

This will greatly increase the number of Mumbai local trains. Currently, the length of some stations is insufficient for 15-coach local trains.

Therefore, the length of platforms is being increased at Vile Parle, Santacruz, Khar Road and Bandra stations of Western Railway. It is likely that 15-coach local trains will start as soon as these works are completed.
