Cyclone Tauktae which hit the city of Mumbai recently affected several communities in Mumbai, especially the fishermen, who live alongside the coast. As per reports, they have suffered a lot due to the harsh conditions and this has eventually affected the business as well. Keeping the same in mind, a few members have appealed to the government to postpone the ban on fishing from June 15 instead of June 1, 2021.

The ban was imposed as per the Maharashtra Marine Fisheries Regulation Act, 1981, where the Department of Fisheries has ordered to stop fishing from June 1 to July 31, 2021. However, this request made by the members has been opposed by the Fishermen Action Committee as it believes that continuing fishing in June could be dangerous for fishermen and has questioned about the responsibility to be taken if a crisis arises.

Keeping this in mind, Devendra Tandel, chairman of the All Maharashtra Fishermen's Action Committee, has requested the fishermen to reconsider their demand.

Fishing is closed during this period every year. The government takes this decision during the two months of June and July to avoid the possibility of accidents at sea caused oftendue to torrential rains and strong winds. However, this year's situation is different, as the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent cyclone affected the business extensively.

Fishermen have stated that the right amount of fish was not available throughout the year and this has resulted in huge losses. In addition, the fishing was closed for a few days due to the cyclone and the days were wasted in this. Considering the same, the group has sought permission to allow fishing for another 15 days as it could recover the business.
