The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert in Mumbai and Thane for Wednesday, June 3, 2020, and a red alert for Palghar for the same day. A low-pressure area is said to intensify into a cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea which will result in pre-monsoon showers at least until Thursday.

A district-wise forecast, issued by the IMD, has put Palghar on “red alert” with the possibility of extremely heavy rain at isolated places for June 3 and 4. Mumbai and Thane, meanwhile, have been put on “orange alert” with the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall at few places. On Sunday, a low-pressure area formed over south-east and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea in the early morning. It is likely to concentrate into a depression by Monday and could intensify into a cyclonic storm over the east-central Arabian Sea. As per IMD, it is said to move nearly northwards initially until June 2 and then recurve north-eastwards and then reach near north Maharashtra and south Gujarat coasts around June 3.

Moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy showers are very likely over Lakshadweep area, Kerala and coastal Karnataka on May 31 and June 1 under the influence of the storm, as per the IMD bulletin. Heavy and extremely heavy rainfall is likely over south Gujarat, north Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, Daman, Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli on June 3 and 4, it adds.

The usual date for the onset of monsoon in Mumbai is June 11 every year. However, the actual onset varies depending on weather systems as last year, it was delayed until June 25. However, the pre-monsoon work in the city is almost completed as it braces itself for heavy monsoons. The CM had further asserted that food grains and medicines will be provided in remote areas during the monsoon season.
